HAZELNUT TREE (Corylus avellana)

Hazelnut Tree is an erect gaited plant, it can be a bush or a tree and it can become 3-7 m high.
Flowers are monosexual. Male ones are pendulous and they grow in autumn, female ones seem like little buds. All Hazelnut Tree cultivar is self-sterile and needs another cultivar to be pollinated.
Its growing-area spaces from mediterranean area to mountain one but it grows better in hill-woods or low mountain. It preferres calcareous, fertile and deep grounds.
Its fruit is composed of two parts: hazel and involucre, this last one is woody and contains a sweet and oily seed, the hazelnut.

We grow the cultivar called "Tonda Gentile delle Langhe", it is Piedmontese and is much in demand in confectionery.
